SWEET PEAS

By Mary Ellen

My husband, Howard, and I met in the most wondrous way. Howard was a bachelor and a city planner for the City of Vancouver, BC when he decided he wanted a slower pace of life, to enrich his life, and create a family with someone.

He applied for several jobs and was accepted in the small quiet town of Duncan, BC on Vancouver Island which would guarantee him time to stop and smell the roses.

He packed up his apartment and on moving day, while crossing the strait on the BC Ferry, he said a prayer: "Dear God, I am ready to meet someone nice and not be alone and to settle down."

Howard's ferry docked, he drove the 40 minutes to Duncan, and arrived at my apartment block. I heard someone moving into an apartment. I was single and had just moved over from Vancouver and did not know many folks so I left my apartment and invited Howard in for tea. We were married 99 days later.

Magic seemed to surround our meeting. We bought a home and moved in on the 100th day. We both loved to garden.

Not long after we moved in, Howard came in the house and was visibly upset. He had lost his new shiny wedding ring while he was gardening. He could not stand the loss of the ring and insisted we go downtown and immediately purchase another one. I thought his devotion was so special.

Several months later when I was out weeding the garden, I saw a sparkle. I walked over to the glittering pea plant and could not believe my eyes! Dangling off the end of a new pea shoot, shining in the sunshine was Howard's wedding ring, ready to be plucked!
